Sock Yarn and Material Selection Brief

Compare proposed sock materials using intended use, yarn references, construction, sample observations and evidence for claims.

01

Describe the product outcome

Start with intended wearer, season, activity, sock length and buyer size reference. Explain the desired surface feel or construction with an existing sample where possible. Everyday crew socks, running socks and heavier winter socks should not be compared using only a fiber percentage. State which qualities are essential and which are preferences open to development.

02

Keep composition and construction distinct

Record the proposed fiber composition and yarn reference, then list the relevant construction decisions separately: cuff, heel, toe, cushioning, mesh or other zones. Identify whether the yarn or finish is nominated by the buyer. If an alternative is proposed, keep it as a separate option with its own sample reference instead of editing the selected material without a record. Material availability is reviewed against the proposed yarn and sock construction. Send the reference sample, intended wearer and use together so the proposed yarn can be reviewed in the actual sock construction.

  • Material record: composition evidence, yarn reference and nominated supplier if any.
  • Color record: shade reference, sample color and approval contact.
  • Development record: sock version, requested comparison and unresolved tests.

03

Agree evidence for performance language

If the buyer wants claims such as moisture management, durability or a particular recovery behavior, ask for the evaluation method and criteria. General textile-testing guidance treats the finished result as more than a fiber name. Record whether the test concerns yarn, fabric or a finished sock, and which version and color were evaluated. Do not inherit a supplier's claim without checking its evidence and scope.

04

Make the comparison useful for a decision

Compare options under the same sample conditions. Record each option's material identity, feel and fit observations, unresolved questions and the decision contact. Keep project-specific availability, minimum quantity and costs separate from technical evaluation. The worksheet records material options and the evaluation required for each.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Describing a sock entirely by fiber percentage.
  • Comparing two materials under different conditions.
  • Treating a yarn claim as evidence for the finished sock.
Technical and regulatory references

Check the scope for your product and destination. These references do not establish certification, approval or test results for a DALI product or factory.

Frequently asked

Buyer questions

01Does a yarn name guarantee the finished sock performance?

No. The material, construction, finishing and actual product evaluation all matter.

02Can I send a reference sock instead of a yarn specification?

Yes, as a starting reference. Identify the qualities you want to retain and allow the team to clarify the material and construction details.

From preparation to development

Discuss the questions that remain open.

Use the guide to organize the information you have, then discuss your product and estimated bulk requirement with DALI. A complete worksheet or technical pack is not required for the first conversation.
