Sock Sizes, Pair Counts and Pack Ratios
Reconcile sock pairs, retail packs, component colors and full or partial cartons with a worked numerical example.
01
Choose a quantity unit and preserve it
Record quantities in pairs, retail packs and cartons using the agreed selling-unit structure. Keep product pairs, retail packs and shipping cartons in different columns. State the buyer size reference and colors for each selling unit. The quote, purchase order and packing instruction should use the same definition rather than relying on the word units.
02
Calculate the pack contents
Suppose the buyer requests 2,000 three-pair packs, each containing one black, one gray and one white pair in the same size. Total product quantity is 2,000 multiplied by 3, or 6,000 pairs. Each color contributes 2,000 pairs. If the size split changes, allocate packs by size first and then derive the corresponding pair quantities.
03
Handle the remainder instead of rounding it away
At 24 retail packs per full carton, 2,000 divided by 24 gives 83 full cartons with 8 packs left. The 83 full cartons contain 1,992 packs and 5,976 pairs. The remaining carton contains 8 packs and 24 pairs if that arrangement is approved. Total shipping cartons would be 84. Do not increase the order to 2,016 packs without the buyer's agreement.
04
Validate every version of the assortment
Check that total pairs equal retail packs multiplied by pairs per pack. Then reconcile size totals, color totals and carton contents. Record any permitted mixed cartons, partial cartons or quantity amendments explicitly. Keep barcode assignments and carton marks linked to the buyer item data. The Excel workbook calculates product quantities, full cartons and remainder packs from the entered allocation. Reconcile those results with the agreed packing instruction before release.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Quoting packs while the buyer assumes pairs.
- Rounding carton counts without allocating the remaining packs.
- Changing the color assortment without updating component totals.

Frequently asked
Buyer questions
01What is the calculation for a partial carton?
Divide pack quantity by full-carton capacity. Record the integer full-carton count and remainder separately, then agree how the remainder is shipped.
02Does the Excel workbook calculate totals automatically?
Yes. Enter retail packs, pairs per pack and packs per full carton. The workbook calculates pairs, full cartons, remainder packs and cartons including a partial carton. Check the results against the agreed packing instruction.
