How to set a useful objective for an apparel sample

Define the decision an apparel sample should support, then connect its evaluation and approval record with the proposed bulk order.

A useful sample request names the decision the buyer needs to make. Fit, construction, materials and packaging are related, but they are not interchangeable approvals. A sample can answer one of these questions while leaving other parts of the product unresolved.

DALI discusses sampling in the context of a proposed bulk manufacturing program. Share the product, expected volume, destination and available references, then identify what the first evaluation should establish. Sample scope, charges and timing are agreed for the project.

State one primary evaluation objective

A fit sample needs a wearer or fit reference and a measurement sheet. A construction sample needs defined seams, openings and component positions. A material comparison needs the candidate materials and the properties to evaluate. A packaging sample needs the intended selling unit and presentation requirements.

For an illustrative boxer-brief development, the initial sample might assess rise, leg length and waistband placement in one size. Those objectives define the measurements and features to evaluate before extending the specification across the size range.

Identify the reference and any substitutions

Use a style code, sample version and specification revision. Record the actual fabric, trim, label and packaging used in the sample. If a provisional material is acceptable, identify why it is being used and which decisions cannot be made from it.

A fit review using substitute elastic should not be treated as approval of the final waistband behavior. Similarly, a plain fabric sample does not approve printed artwork. DALI's fabric, elastic and garment capabilities allow the proposed combination to be discussed, but each approval still needs a defined reference.

Make comments that can guide a revision

Locate the issue and describe the requested change. A comment such as reduce the inseam by the stated measurement is more usable than improve the fit. Include the measurement method, relevant photographs and the sample version being reviewed. Distinguish a required change from a point that still needs discussion.

Keep accepted features visible in the review record, not only the rejected ones. If a revised sample is required, specify what it must demonstrate. Changes to fabric weight, pattern dimensions or component placement may affect one another and should be reviewed as part of the same revision.

Separate sample evaluation from testing requirements

Appearance and fit review are not substitutes for a requested material or product test. DALI supports laboratory evaluations for colorfastness, pH, shrinkage, dimensional stability and bursting strength. The tests relevant to a project depend on its actual materials, product and buyer protocol.

Specify the method, test specimen and acceptance criteria required by your buying team. Identify who will commission any external testing and how the report will be associated with the approved material or product. A general test capability is not a result for the sample in your hands.

Connect the approved reference to bulk production

Before production approval, align the sample comments with the final specification, materials, size and color allocation, labels and packaging. Confirm which reference governs the order and which earlier versions have been replaced. Resolve outstanding decisions rather than leaving contradictory instructions in separate files.

Include the destination, proposed schedule, inspection arrangements and commercial requirements in the discussion. DALI can review the development work and relevant manufacturing operations with your team. The aim is a defined product and approval record that both buyer and production team can use for the proposed bulk order.

Buyer questions

Can a garment factory make a sample before a bulk order?

Sampling can be discussed for a proposed bulk manufacturing program. Share the product, volume estimate and evaluation objective, then agree the sample scope, costs and timing. Sampling is a development step, not an offer for small-batch retail orders.

What should a buyer include in a garment sample request?

Include the style reference, the decision to be evaluated, available drawings or sample references and the proposed materials. Mark substitutions and unresolved details. Identify the specification version and the person responsible for confirming the next decision.
