amfori BSCI and WRAP: Understand the Factory Assessment You Are Requesting

amfori BSCI is a social-compliance audit framework; WRAP is a facility certification program. Neither replaces the buyer's product specification or factory approval process.

Organised garment assembly workstations at a DALI production facility

A social-compliance requirement should identify the proposed production facility and the assessment your sourcing policy accepts. Asking for any factory certificate can produce documents that do not answer the qualification question.

amfori BSCI: an audit framework, not a product certificate

amfori BSCI supports assessment of working conditions against its Code of Conduct. The framework addresses issues such as worker rights, working time, remuneration and health and safety. An audit result is not a BSCI product certificate.

For a buyer, the useful follow-up concerns the specific facility, assessment scope and relevant corrective actions. Acceptance of an assessment is a decision under the buyer's sourcing policy; it is not a universal approval granted by a logo on a website.

WRAP: certification of the facility

WRAP certification assesses a facility against its social-compliance principles. WRAP describes a process in which identified non-compliances must be corrected and verified before certification is granted.

The certification relates to the covered facility. It does not certify a garment's fibre content, chemical test results or workmanship. For a manufacturing network, confirm the proposed production site rather than assuming one facility's status covers all locations.

Keep workplace, product and material checks distinct

Supplier qualification may involve a workplace assessment, product testing, material traceability and a review of production capability. These checks can support the same sourcing decision without being substitutes for one another.

Agree which assessments your company accepts and which additional reviews the proposed product needs. An underwear program, for example, still needs its fit, material, labelling and quality requirements agreed even where the production facility meets the requested social-compliance conditions.

Request relevant information through the qualification process

Share the required assessment framework, proposed product and intended destination at the beginning of supplier discussions. Then review the applicable site information and follow-up requirements through the agreed qualification channel.

DALI's manufacturing network and certification portfolio provide a starting point for supplier qualification. Once the proposed production route is identified, your team can discuss the relevant facility documents and assessment requirements directly with DALI.

Buyer questions

Is amfori BSCI a product or factory certificate?

No. It is a social-compliance audit framework. Ask about the applicable assessment and production facility rather than a generic BSCI certificate.

Does WRAP certification replace garment quality and material testing?

No. WRAP certifies the covered facility's social compliance. Product performance, material claims and market-specific requirements still need separate review.
